Great Missenden Memorial Centre – Refurbishment
The first Great Missenden Memorial Centre was built to commemorate the soldiers who gave their lives during WW1 and to benefit the local community. It was re built in the Buryfield location in 1970.
The Parish Council has now secured a grant to part fund a much needed refurbishment to the building.
The project has received a £71,142 grant from HS2’s Community Environment Fund (CEF).
The grant will pay for replacing all the (single glazed aluminium) doors and windows to improve appearance and will be double glazed to help increase energy efficiency.
Feedback from hall users has, amongst other things, requested improvement to the lighting and main hall flooring. To achieve this, the main hall will have a new suspended ceiling with improved lighting and the well-worn wooden floor will be stripped and re polished. The dark wooden beams and doors in the main hall and entrance will be painted white.
To improve accessibility for users of the
hall a hearing loop will be installed.
Additionally the Parish Council will pay for further improvements to better utilise the space available to meet current needs. The fixed stage and ‘chair cupboard’ will be removed to create a bigger, safer and more user friendly storage area. Some of the space will become a meeting room extension to the Parish Office which has now outgrown its existing space.
Current regular hirers of the hall cover a diverse cross-section of the local community including Age Concern, a ‘Tots’ disco, Zumba classes, Bridge club and a fly fishing knots group.
To minimise disruption to users it is hoped that all the planned work can be carried out during school holiday times.
The CEF fund has been created by HS2 to add benefit to communities along the route that are demonstrably disrupted by the construction of Phase One of HS2 from London to West Midlands. The administration of these funds is managed on behalf of HS2 Ltd by a community charity, Groundwork UK, who ensures that the funds remain available for applications throughout the construction of Phase One – www.groundwork.org.uk/hs2funds.
The Memorial Centre is owned by the Parish Council but is managed by Great Missenden Memorial Centre Management Committee, a registered Charity. For further information on the hall please visit their website at http://www.greatmissendenmemorialcentre.co.uk/
